This is a fill-in module in case your party have yet to reach level 11. It doesn't tie in with the rest of the story arc, and can be dropped without any impact on the adventure path.
Agreed, this mod is supremely droppable. Still, I found a way to make it work as a decent prologue.
Between The Temple Between and Beyond the Mottled Tower, an unspecified amount of time passes. The PCs are obviously the Heroes of Overlook, and they get celebrated as such. Still, there's things going on that need heroes, and the PCs aren't the only adventurers in town.
Enter the Freeriders.
I took the stats that were given to the Freeriders waaaaaay back in Siege of Bordrin's Watch, and updated them to be level 10 PCs. I gave them powers, items, and such. They were...decent, but a definite step down from what my players were used to. They had issues with most of the fights, which I was fine with. I scaled down the dungeon, and only had the way in through the tomb open. That funneled them into the more interesting encounters, in my opinion, and shortened the time they'd be playing these alternate characters. Doing something like this is a good narrative device, but it needs to be short and sweet.
After they defeated Obson, they were on their way back to Overlook when they got jumped by shadowy assailants. Since the beginning of Beyond the Mottled Tower states the Freeriders have scattered to avoid assassins, I thought this would be a good way to show the last known actions of the PCs' major rival adventuring company.
